Empowering Your Child: The Role of Parental Guidance and Shadow Work

Fostering Independence and Resilience in Your Child

Hello all,

Yesterday, life changed a bit. My daughter Alana, her mother, and I spent the evening at her new high school orientation. Touring the campus and meeting her teachers filled me with a mix of excitement and nervousness for us all. Was she, were we, ready for this big transition?

I recently wrote a series on "Raising Anti-Fragile Kids." In it, we discussed embracing failure and fostering a growth mindset, and the importance of cultivating independence in a child's development.

Teaching Independence and Critical Thinking Teaching children to find their way, make choices independently, and think critically is vital for their development. Fostering their independence equips them with the tools to face life's challenges creatively and confidently. As we discussed, letting your kids make and learn from their mistakes fosters independence.

Parental Guidance: Encouraging Without Discouraging But our kids will want our guidance too. One such case occurred recently when Alana asked me if she should join the girls' basketball team. Knowing how competitive prep sports are now, I gave her my "realistic" opinion of her chances of making the team. After reflecting on my response, I had to wrestle with the possibility of being more dismissive and discouraging instead of encouraging, no matter the outcome. Was I implicitly teaching her, 'Don't even try if you might not succeed?' rather than 'Do your best no matter the outcome?' Did my response say more about me and my fear of failure? These are questions that shadow work is meant to expose.

Parental Shadow Work Engaging in shadow work allows parents to confront their fears and biases, enabling them to guide their children more effectively. Parents who practice what they preach, demonstrating how to manage personal challenges and pressures, set a powerful example of anti-fragility.

Take a moment to reflect on how you are supporting your child's journey towards independence and resilience.
