I recently spent an enriching four days with a courageous group of individuals participating in my year-long, four-retreat series called Change Your Story, Change Your Life. Inspired by the profound transformations unfolding within this group, I wanted to share a bit of our experience with you. This essay explains some of the unique methodologies we're exploring, including Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) and shadow work, and their synergistic effects on personal growth. Structured into five detailed sections, this essay covers:

  1. What is Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)? A brief history and explanation.
  2. Introducing IFS to My Change Your Story Cohort: Practical applications.
  3. Understanding Shadow Work: Definition and significance.
  4. The Intersection of IFS and Shadow Work: How they complement each other.
  5. The Importance of Shadow Work for Personal Change: Why it's essential for transformation.

What is Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)? Have any of you heard about It? Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, IFS is a transformative therapeutic approach that views the mind as a system of parts, each with its own perspectives and roles. This method helps individuals heal by identifying, dialoguing with, and harmonizing these inner parts, fostering greater self-awareness and inner peace.

Introducing IFS to My Change Your Story Cohort I introduced IFS to my Change Your Story cohort at the end of retreat two. I did this to give us a few months to work with IFS before retreat three. Retreat three is titled "Our Shadow Selves." In it, we’ll endeavor to illuminate the hidden shadow dynamics IFS aims to harmonize.

Understanding Shadow Work The more I do IFS Therapy with clients, the more I realize it’s just another method for shadow work, albeit structured in a very unique way. Shadow work involves exploring the unconscious parts of ourselves. These "shadows" can include hidden defenses and beliefs. By working with these reflexive patterns, we can achieve greater self-awareness that leads to change and healing.

The Intersection of IFS and Shadow Work Engaging in shadow work is crucial for anyone looking to make lasting changes. By illuminating, confronting, and integrating these hidden aspects, we can break free from self-limiting patterns, improve our relationships, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-acceptance and authenticity.

The Importance of Shadow Work for Personal Change If you're interested in a deep dive into shadow work and other transformative practices, consider joining my Change Your Story, Change Your Life year-long, four-retreat series.
